The Jockey Club Rooms

As I visualise the Jockey Club Rooms in my mind I get a sense of wonderful light, rich decor and a sense of classic opulence. (Wow, that was a bit of a wordy opening sentence!) It`s the quality of  light though that stands out in my mind and I know, that as a photographer, I do often judge venues by the quality of light available. The light in the JCR is wonderfully varied but there are several beautiful spots where it gently falls off through huge picture windows to provide a fantastic warmth and softness perfect for taking portraits. Almost everywhere, in most of the rooms, there is beautiful, soft directional lighting!

Enough of my light geeking!

The JCR are set off Newmarket High Street and are pretty much unique in that the place has a kind of gentleman`s club (but in a good way!) feel to it, combined with a classic English elegance combined with a funny sort of Billy Bunter humour! The gentleman`s toilets are to be seen to be believed and it is set in a glorious walled garden with a terrace, manicured lawns and gravelled walkways.

Inside the rooms are opulent (I love that word!) to say the least with chandaliers, open fireplaces, huge comfy leather sofas and chairs, thick carpeting, wallpaper and, of course, an ongoing racing theme in the huge number works of art on show.

Wedding wise the JCR is a fantastic venue. There is a beautiful lounge (with great light!) leading onto a large outdoor terrace with views over the lawns and gardens which are perfect for group shots whilst guests sip champagne and relax. There is also a large, separate dining room and another adjacent room which can be set up for the evening entertainment so that there is no waiting around for room changes etc. Everything feels very private and personal as the rooms are available exclusively for weddings and the staff show a real attention to detail that isn’t always apparent at other venues in my experience. The JCR have a specialist wedding planner, Victoria Mills, who is extremely experienced and helpful and I know that the couples whose weddings I have photographed at the JCR have found her help and support invaluable.

Kate – 3 months to go

So, there I was, aged 31, having had several very bad experiences, thinking I had officially given up on men – and had kind of come to terms with that…in a very bitter way! Then, one day, I decided to insult a young man on Facebook…not a me thing to do at all – I HATE arguing with anyone, and it was an argument between this young man and a friend of mine and, therefore, nothing to do with me but, hey ho, mum always says it happens when you least expect it and I guess finding the love of your life by insulting them is pretty much the least expected thing ever!! So that is how I met my Tom, and, funnily enough, I thank my lucky stars I was in a bad mood that day!

We actually hadn’t been together all that long when we got engaged – only 6 months – but I cannot explain the absolute certainty that this is my guy – so much so that I think I’d have agreed to marry him even a week in to it!

Our engagement was a bit strange really – we had talked about it and knew it was where we were headed, but Tom wanted to save up to buy me a crazily expensive ring and, one day, I told him that this really was not necessary as I would marry him with a cracker ring in Gretna Green if necessary. A few days after this we told our parents we wanted to get married – even though no actual proposal had happened, it kind of took on that quality as if it had a mind of its own! My mum, who had never approved of any of my previous boyfriends, gave us one of her rings to use as our ring – that is how much she loves Tom…though I defy anyone not to! The ring was too big as it was though, so off it went for resizing before I could wear it…..

On the day It was ready, Tom and I went to pick up the ring together, which he swiftly pocketed, and then we went for a cocktail to celebrate. It was there, in a lovely intimate little bar in Cambridge, that he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I knew it was coming – but I cried all the same – even more so as our favourite song, and our now obvious first dance, Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ started playing as he slipped the ring on my finger – we couldn’t believe it!

So that was the start – and a wonderful start it was too! Neither of us were fans of long engagements so we decided the following September was perfect. Lovely – enough time to organize things with not too much stress….says she who has no bloody idea how to even start organizing a wedding! Of course, I did the usual thing of buying lots of wedding magazines – at last I got to go to that special place on the magazine racks that, as a single girl, I only ever looked at in wonder! However, instead of feeling reassured by all the wonderful ideas, I gradually felt more and more concerned…what on earth was I going to do first? What theme did I want? What was a ‘favour’? What on earth is going on with ‘wedding etiquette? How could I make these HUGE decisions? What did I want anyway? ARRRGGGHHHH!!!

Unlike many women, it seems, I didn’t have that picture of my wedding in my head that I had dreamed about since a young age – all I knew was that I wanted it to be fun – not ‘poncey’ – and kind of country-ish rather than towny (I later found out that this was termed ‘rustic’). Luckily, Tom felt the same – PHEW!

Luvcake

Despite being a specialist wedding photographer I get asked to photograph a number of different things as well. I have photographed for websites and brochures before so I was really pleased when Irette from Luvcake contacted me  to me to photograph for her website. Of course the other great thing about the job was that I got to photogaph lots of yummy cakes! I love photographing weddings but cakes are so much easier, they stay still, I can control the light, there are no time pressures etc etc!

Irette was lovely to meet and she is clearly is a woman obsessed with baking! She talks about her cakes with love and passion and, needless to say, the cakes were amazing. My children also loved this photoshoot as, when we had finished, I took home a huge doggy bag of samples!

You can visit Irette and Luvcake at her website here. She bakes for all occassions including weddings so give her a call.
