Why employ a professional photographer?

As a child I was fascinated by my parent’s wedding album. It was white leather, quite small and was filled with “one to a page” black and white images. It had that whiff of yesteryear, I loved the 60′s flavour, the cars, clothes and hair! However, far more important were the images of my grandparents and family all dressed up for the occasion, some were still alive and some were not, some I had met and some I hadn’t, but here they all were together in their finery for the day! I found the images of my parents really quite moving – a young couple at the start of a great adventure, full of hope, life and love and, most importantly of all, the whole album depicted a time in which I quite literally did not exist. The album was part of my childhood and felt like a part of my heritage and identity. Like an heirloom it is a vital part of my family history.
My parent’s album, despite it’s significance to me, is actually very ordinary. Any competent professional photographer today will produce something far more powerful and precious. The important thing is to employ a professional photographer and not either a friend to take the pictures or, worse still, pay a “non professional” to do it! So many times I have heard people say that they wish they had hired a professional photographer. After 15 years of marriage the only tangible thing you have left is the photographs – their quality and value increase over time, not just for you but for your children and perhaps to their children as well. Think of your photographs as a long term investment in quality, not just in the fantastic images but the whole package, including your album. It is this attention to detail and to quality that I passionately believe in and underpins everything about the wedding photography service that you will receive from Lightworks Photography.
There are lots of articles around describing why you should employ a professional photographer for your wedding. By way of being a little different here are a few facts about the wedding photography industry that may well serve the same purpose….
- You do not need any qualifications at all to set up as a wedding photographer.
- At least one of the so called “professional bodies” allow people to become members, and advertise themselves as such, without any qualification at all apart from paying the membership fee.
- It is fairly easy to build a reasonably convincing website having just photographed a friend’s wedding and paid £35 for a website template.
- You do not legally need to have any public liability or indemnity insurance to set up as a professional wedding photographer.
- Not all “wedding photographers” carry back up equipment.
- Some wedding albums are extremely cheap to buy and are frequently sold to customers at a profit margin of 100 – 200%.
- Photographic printing is available online for less than 15 pence each.
You get the idea…..
